Why Ronda Rousey Has No Plans to Return to WWE
Ronda Rousey, one of the most iconic figures in both MMA and WWE, recently revealed she has no reason to attempt a WWE comeback. After a decorated wrestling career, including multiple Women’s Championships and a headline WrestleMania moment, Rousey feels she has accomplished everything she set out to do in WWE. Moreover, with key friends and allies no longer part of the company, and her focus shifting to family life, a return to the wrestling ring doesn’t fit her current priorities.
The Dream That Never Materialized: The Four Horsewomen Storyline
One of the biggest reasons Ronda Rousey chose not to return revolves around an unfulfilled creative vision. Rousey wanted to do a run with the Four Horsewomen—her own MMA-inspired faction that includes Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke, and Marina Shafir. Unfortunately, this storyline was teased but never fully realized in WWE, which has its own separate Four Horsewomen faction (Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Bayley, and Mercedes Moné). Rousey expressed frustration that WWE “dangled that carrot” throughout her tenure but never let it happen, leaving a major creative desire unmet.
This lack of creative satisfaction was compounded by the fact that all her MMA Four Horsewomen friends have since left WWE. Baszler was released in May 2023, Shafir is now with AEW, and Duke is no longer on WWE’s roster. Without her close allies, Rousey feels there’s little motivation to return just for solo appearances or matches.
Career Accomplishments: She’s Done It All in WWE
Rousey’s WWE résumé is impressive. She is a three-time WWE Women’s Champion, won the Women’s Royal Rumble in 2022, and even held the Women’s Tag Team Championship, unifying it with the NXT tag titles in 2023. She headlined WrestleMania, a milestone few female wrestlers have achieved. Given this breadth of success, Rousey believes she has already accomplished everything she wanted within WWE and doesn’t see the need to chase further accolades.
Her last WWE match was at SummerSlam 2023 where she lost an MMA Rules match against Shayna Baszler. Since then, she has made a few appearances for smaller promotions but has stayed out of the ring, signaling a formal retirement from professional wrestling.
Creative Frustrations and Behind-the-Scenes Chaos
Rousey hasn’t shied away from discussing the less glamorous side of her WWE experience. She described her time in the company under Vince McMahon’s leadership as an “anxiety-filled and chaotic s--- show,” suggesting backstage turmoil and dissatisfaction with the company’s creative direction played a significant role in her decision to step away.
Her frustration with WWE’s creative regime extended to her character’s storyline development. Despite the hype around her role and potential story arcs, she felt the creative team never fully supported her vision or gave her the platform she deserved.
Family Comes First: The Real Reason for Staying Away
Beyond the ring, Rousey’s life has evolved with a clear focus on family. She now has two daughters and hopes for more children. The demanding WWE lifestyle, with its extensive travel and time away from home, no longer fits with her priorities. Rousey openly said she can’t imagine being on the road again for WWE, making it clear that family commitments are paramount.
This shift to family life is a major factor in her decision to retire from professional wrestling. Although Rousey admires her friends’ work in other wrestling promotions like AEW, she doesn’t see herself following that path due to her personal situation.
What’s Next for Ronda Rousey?
While Rousey is officially stepping away from WWE and pro wrestling, she remains a prominent figure in sports and entertainment. Fans can expect her to focus on growing her family and possibly exploring other ventures outside the wrestling world. Her legacy as a trailblazer in women’s MMA and wrestling is secure, and her candid reflections help fans understand why a WWE comeback is unlikely.
